Claire was born in Surrey where she started dancing at the age of three (RAD Ballet and ISTD Tap and Modern). She established Eastbourne Dance Space in 2015 – a not-for-profit community dance studio that offers a wide variety of classes for adults of all ages, experience levels and backgrounds. Claire is passionate about sharing the benefits of dance for all. She is a qualified Dance for Parkinson’s practitioner, taking social referrals from the local NHS Parkinson’s Nurse for her weekly Dance for Parkinson’s class.
Claire is an experienced, Licentiate qualified ISTD dance teacher and, in addition to EDS, delivers a wide range of children’s classes at her other school, Dance Makers Academy, and as a freelance teacher at other local schools. Prior to her dance teaching career, her interest in food science and nutrition led her to achieving a Food Science BSc (Hons) degree, which resulted in a rewarding nine-year career in the food industry.
Claire has performed in and choreographed for shows in venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, Docklands Arena and Birmingham Indoor Arena. She has delivered workshops for children and adults, provided dance training for figure skaters and pre-audition coaching for West End performers, as well as delivering inclusive dance workshops. Claire has been recorded speaking about the benefits of dance for BBC Radio 4’s Listening Project along with Claire C, been featured on the People Dancing website and in the ISTD magazine, on local BBC radio and was proud that EDS was awarded the Arts Award in the local Community Awards 2018 for their contribution to the local community. Claire is also a vocalist with a local band.
"I love running EDS and teaching our fantastic community of adult dancers, and would encourage everyone to come and join us. Try a class and enjoy the health and well-being benefits that dancing offers every body! We'd love to welcome you!"
She teaches ballet and contemporary, does a great job of looking after our social media content and continues to be instrumental in growing our community of dancers through her creative ideas and dedication.
Claire has been dancing since she was two years old, beginning with Cechetti training in South Africa where she was born, and moving onto Imperial Classical Ballet training with the ISTD when she moved to Eastbourne aged ten.
She studied ballet up to advanced level as a teenager and complemented her ballet training with an A Level in Contemporary Dance from Sussex Downs College. She went on to study dance at degree level and graduated from Middlesex University with BA Honours in Dance. Claire based her studies on dance education and choreography and has experience of teaching children from age two upwards and young adults with learning difficulties.
Having taken a break to travel and work abroad in Hong Kong and South Africa, Claire returned in 2008 to study ballet teacher training with the ISTD, achieving Diploma in Dance Education (DDE). She also holds a Licentiate qualification with the IDTA, and is qualified to teach Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT) and ID Dance (contemporary). She currently freelances for several dance schools and companies in the area, working with children from age two upwards, right up to adults. She teaches mainly ballet and contemporary and has choreographed for many shows and festivals.
“Dancing is a passion which I have always had and believe that everyone should have the opportunity to experience the joy it brings! My own path to dance has not been conventional, and I hope to show people that you don't have to be a 'typical' dancer to enjoy and benefit physically and emotionally from joining dance classes!”
